The Story
Be Well was started at the beginning the 2012 winter semester by two forth year students enrolled in Ryerson's School of Nutrition. These students felt a need to create a sense of community among all nutrition students. As the school of nutrition does not have a comfortable student lounge, often times students will attempt to socialize in the computer room, or at the very few and often formal social gatherings that are held. They saw a need for a causal space to simply relax, get to know one another and perhaps provide an opportunity for older students to pass on their knowledge to younger students. Two professors in the School of Nutrition assisted these students in making this happen. With much effort, Be Well was born.
The two students managed to recruit 1st, 3rd and 4th year nutrition students whom together managed to facilitate social gathering bi-weekly in a new room provided to the School of Nutrition by Ryerson University. It is located at KHW 77a.
Be Well continues to aim to ensure that Be Well is a nutrition student driven event. This means that Be Well will not have a leader or political agenda, which allows for Be Well to facilitate events that the student body asks for and that the student body helps to create and facilitate.
Most of the time Be Well events include snacks, board games and simply a good time with friends, on other occasions student came together to play Dance Central on the Xbox 360 or enjoy salsa lessons.
This year Be Well has managed to expand. Over the summer Be Well has created a website (rubewell.weebly.com), a logo, and participated in the School o Nutrition Orientation. Be Well has also changed from a bi-weekly event to a weekly event, occurring every Wednesday from 12:30pm -2:00pm for students to drop in anytime, relax and have fun.
Since the beginning of September Be Well has facilitated a picnic in the quad, soccer in the quad and a Thanksgiving potluck. As the weather changes there will be more Xbox parties, lunches, and even salsa classes.
Many students have volunteered their talents for Be Well, some of which include Belly Dancing and Yoga. In essence Be Well will continue to be a student driven time and space for Nutrition students to simply chill.
